Sokoban: learn through an example

Bring your attention to one round of Sokoban. Push every crate onto a target. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

A small practice goal

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your objective

Push every crate onto a target. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

The steps to play

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

An example to follow

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

One detail worth checking

Consider the player’s access behind crates. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
