Chess Tactics Puzzles: rules and examples

Start Chess Tactics Puzzles by looking at the playing area and its controls. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

A small practice goal

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

The objective of a round

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Start with a deliberate move.

Work through the instructions

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Using the playing area

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Read the matching step again.

One detail worth checking

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Check the rule before repeating the action. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
